OCS Spedition offers an innovative rail-based logistics solution to and from China on the new Silk Road

China's economic importance has been growing for some time and offers a wide range of opportunities as a manufacturing location for numerous German companies. China is one of the most important production locations for the electronics, fashion and toy industries. The import of Chinese products to Germany and thus the importance of the new Silk Road is increasing more and more. Many parts for the automotive industry, components for the telecommunications industry and consumer goods are imported from China. China is well on the way to overtaking Germany as the world export champion.

Importing and exporting by sea is still one of the most reliable and affordable transport solutions. A container ship has space for several thousand containers, but takes a good four weeks to complete the long journey and has to make between six to eight stops. Many companies often don't have the time to market their consumer goods because they are subject to fast-moving trends that need to be responded to promptly. Air freight impresses with shorter delivery times, but is extremely expensive compared to sea freight. The golden mean is the China train on the new Silk Road. The train is not only cost-effective, environmentally friendly and safe, but also impresses with shorter delivery times than sea freight and significantly lower transport costs compared to air freight. The China train covers the approximately 10,000 km long route of the new Silk Road within 17 days on average.

The freight train is a step into a new era of global trade between Asia and Europe. The route between Beijing and Hamburg is one of the longest train routes in the world and is supported by the “ One Belt, One Road ” or “Belt and Road Initiative”. From the large metropolises such as Beijing, Zhengzou or Chongqing it goes through China, Mongolia, Russia, Belarus and Poland to Germany. During its journey, the train is moved to different rail gauges twice. At the Chinese-Mongolian border in Erlianhot/Zamyn Ude from standard gauge (1435 mm) to Russian broad gauge (1520 mm) and at the Belarusian-Polish border in Brest/Malaszewicze again to standard gauge. The containers are lifted onto transport wagons with the required track width. This process takes less than an hour. The trains are always driven by locomotive drivers who are replaced after several hundred kilometers - but at the latest at the national borders.
