Mission Forest: How OCS transforms transport into living environmental protection

The logistics industry faces a dual challenge: moving goods efficiently while simultaneously minimizing its carbon footprint. At OCS Spedition GmbH, we meet this responsibility with a clear goal – through our "Mission Forest" , we combine modern transport logistics with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility.

CO₂ facts from road freight transport

A fully loaded 40-ton truck emits approximately 1,440 kg of CO₂e. These emissions result from diesel consumption – even for vehicles meeting the Euro VI standard.

So we're talking about 24 tons being transported over a distance of 800 kilometers.
That gives 24 t × 800 km, or 19,200 ton-kilometers.

Each tonne-kilometer emits 75 grams of CO₂ equivalents.
19,200 tonne-kilometers × 75 g equals 1,440 kilograms of CO₂e – that is, 1.44 tons of CO₂e for the entire transport.

This means that in order to make a significant contribution to climate protection in this example, one should offset the entire 1.44 tons of CO₂e – exactly the amount produced during this transport.

Two trees – a contribution for generations

A single tree in Germany binds an average of 600–800 kg CO₂e over its lifetime (50–80 years). This means that, in the long term, just two newly planted trees would be sufficient to completely absorb the entire CO₂ emissions generated by transporting this amount of CO₂.

“Mission Forest” – responsibility in action at OCS

For every full truckload (FTL) shipment, we plant at least one tree, preferably in Northern Germany, where forest cover is unfortunately only around 5%. Furthermore, through our partnership with ClimatePartner the financing of certified climate contributions for international projects.

We deliberately use the term "climate contribution" instead of "compensation" to express our position: responsibility does not end with numbers – it begins with action.

🌱 Forests can do more than just bind CO₂

Our example shows that this specific transport can be fully offset in the long term by planting two trees. And the forest provides much more than that.

  • Improving the microclimate: Trees cool, filter fine dust and mitigate heat.
  • Store water & protect soil: Forests prevent erosion and promote groundwater.
  • Protecting habitats: Biodiversity grows with every mixed forest.
  • Promoting recreation and education: Forests create learning environments and nature experiences.
  • Strengthening health: The forest has been proven to have a positive effect on the immune system and mental health.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Sustainability that lasts

Our goal at OCS is not just to offset emissions, but to create genuine, tangible added value for our region and future generations. The "Forest Mission" is therefore more than a project – it's a commitment. A commitment to the responsible use of natural resources and to a future where sustainable practices are part of everyday life.

Through targeted reforestation, we are creating new, accessible natural areas right on site – especially in regions like Northern Germany, where forests have been underrepresented. These new forest areas not only offer ecological benefits but also invite people to consciously experience nature again. Families can spend time together there, children can discover nature with all their senses, and school classes can carry out nature-based educational projects. This creates not only a contribution to climate protection but also a space for recreation, learning, and a connection with the environment.

In the long term, such projects also strengthen our region's resilience to climate challenges. Every tree planted is a promise – to the environment, to our community, and to the future. Because true climate protection doesn't begin somewhere else in the world, but right here – visibly, tangibly, and across generations.

🌱 Invitation to the planting event on November 15th

This year, we're putting our mission into action once again – and we warmly invite all our business partners, their families, and friends to join us on November 15th for our big tree-planting event. This event is not only a contribution to climate protection, but also a true community experience – with shovels, gloves, and plenty of team spirit. Our goal this year: to plant almost the entire area of the prepared meadow, thus taking another visible step towards a climate-resilient region.
