The new Formula 1 season kicks off this coming weekend. Even as a child and teenager, I was fascinated by the world of Formula 1. I watched almost every race live, no matter the time, and was captivated by the speed, the thrill, and of course, the legend himself, Michael Schumacher! No one shaped the racing series as much as Schumi did, and his talent and determination still inspire me today. But while I followed the victories and championships with shining eyes back then, I had no idea of the immense logistical effort that goes on behind the scenes to make these spectacular races possible. So today, I'm taking a look at Formula 1 from the perspective of an enthusiastic logistics expert.
The invisible championship: The logistics behind Formula 1
The fascination of Formula 1 lies not only in the speed of the cars and the brilliance of the drivers, but also in the extraordinary logistics that form the heart of this global sport. Less visible, but at least as impressive, is the logistical feat that makes it possible to transport the Formula 1 racing circus around the globe.
A change of course: The influence of maritime transport on Formula 1
Until the mid-2000s, teams rented their equipment for overseas races locally. But with the switch to sea freight around 2004, a slower but more cost-effective mode of transport than air freight, a new era began. “We have five sea freight sets traveling around the world,” explains Gerrard O’Reilly, logistics manager for Red Bull Racing. Each team has several identical sets of equipment, allowing them to be present in different locations simultaneously.
The Art of Planning
Formula 1 logistics is truly an art form, a logistics championship, one might say. At European circuits, the race cars are conveniently transported by truck, which is one of our strengths and where we at OCS have been serving our satisfied customers for over 30 years. For the more remote venues, air freight becomes the indispensable lifeline for smooth logistics. Six Boeing 777s are chartered annually for this purpose, carrying an impressive cargo ranging from chassis and engines to the delicate wings of the race cars. This amounts to around 30 tons of freight per team, transported by air from race to race. The aircraft cover a combined distance of approximately 150,000 km each year – a distance that far surpasses the challenges of an overloaded suitcase. In this logistical scenario, DHL a key role for decades as the official logistics expert, masterfully managing the complex task of moving the Formula 1 circus globally.
The Brexit challenge
In Europe, where most of the racing calendar takes place, road transport is the norm. But since Brexit, truck transport between Great Britain and the rest of Europe has become more complicated, comparable to overseas races. Border crossings, especially through the tunnel, with 40 trucks at a time, pose a challenge. "Not all trucks get through there so smoothly," says Sissing, another logistics expert. A barely visible, yet crucial challenge in Formula 1 transport logistics is customs clearance. Every part crossing customs borders carries a history of complex paperwork and strict customs formalities. This is where the ATA Carnet comes in, a complex logistical element that declares the parts for temporary import and allows them to pass smoothly through customs. Here, the slightest oversight can mean the difference between victory and defeat. Just imagine how Schumacher would have felt if he had to forgo his beloved Italian spaghetti on a race day.
A personal commitment to excellence
In this world of complex logistics, OCS plays a crucial role. My own passion for Formula 1 and the realization of the logistical feats behind every race inspired me to also ascend to the top tier with OCS. Our expertise in customs clearance and the transport of highly sensitive goods supports our customers in ensuring seamless operations – a mission that is also influenced by my passion for motorsport.
