That the coronavirus would have such a serious impact on Europe, and Germany in particular, was something no one could have truly imagined at the beginning of 2020. Now, the economy is looking back on a first quarter full of restrictions. In this article, we would like to focus specifically on the changes and outlook within logistics chains.
Despite all the uncertainties, particularly those fueled by the media in recent weeks, the German population has familiarized itself with the federal government's regulations and is adhering to them. A sense of understanding and caution regarding the virus has apparently become part of many people's daily lives, even though numerous hurdles had to be overcome and organized. The contact restrictions and school closures, in particular, are temporary measures unprecedented in Germany. Nevertheless, initial indications offer grounds for hope that, for the first time, the epidemic will not spread as rapidly as it has so far.
What does this mean specifically for logistics right now?
The so-called "panic buying" suddenly made people realize how important a functioning logistics chain is. The disproportionately high demand for items such as toilet paper and disinfectant has presented manufacturers and logistics companies with challenges that now need to be addressed. Most borders are currently closed to civilian travelers in order to further reduce the spread of the virus. However, the flow of goods is not affected, even if deliveries may take considerably longer due to the checks. Experts therefore repeatedly emphasize that there will be no serious shortages of basic supplies. On the other hand, the entire logistics sector naturally bears a special responsibility in the spread of the virus, as drivers traveling by road and rail across Europe could, of course, also spread pathogens. It is therefore important to us that all our drivers take special hygiene measures to do their part in containing the virus. The most important finding, however, remains that the supply chains continue to operate smoothly.
Can individual regulations within the EU disrupt logistics?
Due to the current widespread uncertainty regarding further decisions by individual countries, it is virtually impossible to predict whether borders might be closed to goods deliveries in the future. Freight transport in Europe has so far been largely exempt from the restrictions. In some countries, the weekend driving ban for trucks will even be lifted to ensure a continuous supply of goods to the population. Many countries are also considering a temporary relaxation of driving and rest time regulations for drivers. These decisions demonstrate the crucial importance of the logistics chain, which usually operates behind the scenes. This ensures the supply of all essential goods.
Check the borders via live video!
In 2020, digitalization makes it easier than ever to see what's happening around the world. For example, the software provider Sixfold can answer your questions about the current situation at borders. They have created a freely accessible map that provides real-time information on waiting times at European borders. Please note, however, that the information provided there is not maintained by OCS Spedition, and therefore we cannot guarantee its accuracy.
Recommendations for protecting the health of everyone involved in the supply chain
Especially in logistics, where many employees cannot simply stay home or even work from home, special measures are in place to maintain hygiene standards. As a freight forwarding company, we see it as our duty and responsibility to contribute to managing the crisis. The protection and health of our employees, customers, business partners, and drivers are our top priority at OCS. The delivery and collection of goods by vehicles and drivers at recipients, senders, and warehouses is currently a process that should be well-organized to minimize the risk of infection. Keep an eye on the positive developments!
Despite all the shocking news of the past week, we should primarily refocus our attention on positive stories. Back in February, we reported in a blog post on the impact of the coronavirus, which at that time was still concentrated in China and Asia. Now, media outlets and press offices there are reporting almost complete recoveries of all those infected and a restart of the Chinese economy. In Germany, too, people have rallied together in a different way and are focusing on a functioning, considerate coexistence. Therefore, we at OCS Spedition are also very pleased that there are glimmers of hope that give us cause for optimism. Together we are strong and will overcome this crisis.
So stay hopeful and, above all, healthy! Take some time for yourself without constantly watching bad news – focus on staying healthy! Of course, we are always available to answer any questions you may have regarding logistics and the coronavirus.
