Berlin Zoom OCS Pandas

The transport of the Chinese roof tiles for Europe's most modern panda enclosure is being handled by the OCS forwarding company

The time is almost here: on June 24th, the two panda bears Meng Meng and Jiao Qing land in Berlin by plane and then move into the Berlin Zoo. If the saying "Tell me your name, and I'll tell you who you are..." holds true, then the choice of pandas is a real stroke of luck for the Berlin Zoo. Meng Meng roughly translates to "little dream" and Jiao Qing to "darling." After a quarantine period, the two button-eyed bears will be presented to the public in July.

For Chancellor Angela Merkel, it is a great honor to open the modern panda enclosure together with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in early July. The nearly 5,500-square-meter facility will include a visitor pavilion, a veterinary clinic, retreat areas, and a breeding and nesting room.

The zoo set itself a very tight schedule for the construction of the natural landscape with bamboo and waterways. In a construction phase of just 14 months, the most modern panda habitat in Europe was built. Chinese authorities have established very strict regulations for keeping pandas abroad. Therefore, Zoo Director Andreas Knieriem and his team traveled to China several times to learn about the specific requirements for keeping and breeding pandas.

There are just under 2,000 pandas left in the world, of which about 50 live outside of China. During a state visit in October 2015, the Chinese government announced that it would loan a pair of pandas to Germany for breeding purposes .

To allow visitors to observe the two black and white animals in a suitable setting as they eat or sleep amidst the natural landscape of bamboo and streams, the visitor pavilion is being built entirely in the Chinese style. The roof will be covered with authentic Chinese roof tiles, lovingly handcrafted to a high standard. After being fired at temperatures above 900 degrees Celsius, they are coated with a wafer-thin, glass-like glaze that makes the porous clay waterproof. We were entrusted by OCS Spedition GmbH with the timely transport and customs clearance of the high-quality roof tiles, which were packed in wooden crates.

We are pleased to have made a small contribution to the new home of those who will feel very comfortable by transporting the Chinese roof tiles.
